Ankara (Turkey): Dramatic formation and work conditions for young people
From the report of the Turkish union representatives
No reliable figures for the capital region exist, therefore the following figures are mentioned as examples: 70 % of the population are younger than 35 years and the persons aged 15-25 years constitute 40 % of the population, which means 25 millions humans.
The employment situation is dramatic, since mostly unskilled young people look for work. They often work for only 100 US dollars per month without any social security. More and more young women appear on the job market. In the scope of the current economic crisis however an academic formation is no warranty for a work place at all.
Only workers liable to social security can become union members. Approx. 20 % of these workers are union members and mainly belong to large-scale enterprises. Few are young people, so that a working group was established for the recruitment of young members.
