Appeal of the European Capitals Trade Union Conference in Berlin to hold demonstrations on 21st September at Liège, 19th October at Gent, 13th December at Brussels
Delegates condemn violence against peaceful demonstrators
The EU Council of Economics and Finance Ministers will meet in Lüttich on 22nd and 23rd September.
The European Capitals Trade Union Conference welcomes the initiative of the Belgian council presidency to put the subject of Tobin tax on the agenda and expects concrete measures of implementation to be derived from the debate. The justified concerns raised by an overwhelming majority of peaceful demonstrators in Gothenburg and Genoa must no longer be ignored.
The delegates of the European Capitals Trade Union Conference denounce any form of violent actions of demonstrators but equally criticize inadequate police actions against peaceful demonstrators in Gothenburg and Genoa. Up to now, young people and trade union members from many European nations are kept in prison. Therefore, the European Conference calls on the responsible governments to make sure that legal proceedings are accelerated and that the persons concerned may return to their home countries as soon as possible.
Despite the dramatic events that took place during the past summit meetings the governments still strongly resist the urgently necessary discussion of the social and ecological consequences of globalisation. Therefore the public pressure must continue.
For this reason the Conference of european capitals supports the appeal of the European Trade Union Federation to hold demonstrations on the occasion of the Belgian presidency on 21st September at Liége, on 19th October at Gent and on 13th December at Brussels.
