Chronic employment deficiency in the Area of Brussels-Capital
Thibaut Michot, FGTB, and Mustapha Azizi, CSC, Brussels
The Region of Brussels-Capital has suffered of a chronic employment deficiency for more than 20 years. A high unemployment rate is a characteristic of the Area.
Nearly 25% of the working population (old and pre-retired unemployed included) are concerned. This percentage represents 70.420 unemployed work applicants, as to say an increase of 4,1% compared to last year.
32,4% of these work applicants are young people disposing, for the large majority, of a very low formation level (secondary inferior). 41% of the unemployed in Brussels are of foreign origin. This percentage can not only be explained by a lack of qualification but also by a serious phenomenon of discriminations in the scope of recruitment.
As trade-union organizations, we require a control everywhere possible, for example in vocational training institutions. We require a real policy of job creation and not only plans of unemployment reduction reduced to an assistance to the employers' world and to a manipulation of the statistics in order to reach the rates imposed by Europe.
We permanently fight to establish a balance of power favorable to us, no matter on what level: local, regional, national or international.
