Dieter Scholz, chairman of the DGB, national district Berlin Brandenburg: The Euro does not replace social justice in Europe
Trade union federations of European capitals meet in Berlin

/cc/img/pool/DCP_2334-Scholz.jpg „Social justice and not a common currency serves as model for our common Europe.“ This is what Dieter Scholz, chairman of the DGB, national district Berlin Brandenburg referred to on the European capitals trade union conference in Berlin. Through the initiative of the DGB and supported by the European Union unionists from 16 countries meet from the 5th to the 8th of September 2001 discussing about the topic „Europe‘s youth needs education and employment“.

Scholz fears that many governments in Europe rather keep young people in national occupation programs instead of offering them occupation entrance facilities. Europe needed a right to formation and work. Persons who were excluded did not feel accepted in a democratic community. There was a serious danger that after resignation and apathy a turn to right-wing extremist „ratcatchers“ followed. Political education work must take more countermeasures.

/cc/img/pool/DCP_2332-Runde.jpg The DGB realized the historical chance for the extension of the European Union and supported it politically. The DGB national district maintained intensive cooperation with the Polish trade unions for years. The expected immigration from Eastern Europe could be regulated by flexible temporary provisions, such as an assignment law containing social standards, said Scholz.

The DGB boss clearly criticized the policy of the European central bank (ECB). It’s focus on price stability had too little effect. Facing mass unemploymen the ECB must take it‘s occupation-political responsibility. The ECB had to send a clear interest signal, this would raise the home demand.
