Dr. Barbara Tham, Center for applied policy research (CAP), research group on youth and Europe
In front of the delegates of the European capitals trade union conference, Mrs. Dr. Barbara Tham indicated, that in the European Union in general the average youth unemployment rate among persons under the age of 25 years is twice as high as the total unemployment rate. The general average rate in the European Union amounts to 8 %, the average rate among the persons under 25 years amounts to 15,5 %.
However, essential regional differences exist in each country. These vary from 64,7 % in Calabria/South Italy up to 2,9 % in Flevoland in the Netherlands.
Youth unemployment in the European Union - gender specific differences (1/2001)
In the south of Europe young women are affected to a much higher extent by youth unemployment. In Germany and Denmark however young men are more strongly concerned, which is due to their education level.
On the European Union level it has to be stated that youth unemployment decreases with increasing education level. The serioust problem exists on the level between formation and the first job. Therefore the rate of part time work is much higher among young employees than among all employees.
