The Jean Monnet House, situated in the western center of Berlin, accomodates
different federations and associations, which devoted themselves to the European
idea.
It is the headquarter of the German registered society for the promotion
of political, cultural and social relations in Europe and the European Information
Center with its extensive meeting and services supply concerning the topic
Europe.
The house is named after one of the founder members of the European Communities,
the French politician Jean Monnet.
Jean Monnet (1888-1979) was the deputy Secretary-General of the
League of Nations in the early twenties. During the Second Worl War Jean
Monnet elaborated the American Victory Program, a plan for the conversion
of the war to the postwar production. Back in Europe, as a director of the
planning department (1946-1950) he set up modernization programs for the
French economy. Jean Monnet became President of the Paris Schumanplan-conference
and later President of the High Authority of the Coal and Steel Community.
1955 Jean Monnet founded the action committee of the united states of Europe,
also called Monnet-committee.
Numerous honours were conferred on Jean Monnet. Among others he received
the International Karlsprize of the city of Aachen. 1976, the heads of goverment
of the European Communities appointed Jean Monnet the first honorary citizen
of Europe.
